The Marietta City Council made good on its plans to ban shareable dockless scooters at its Wednesday night meeting, voting unanimously to prohibit the devices in the city.
As the MDJ previously reported, the council first discussed the matter at its agenda work session Monday.
The ban applies to rentable scooters provided by several companies, though residents can still ride their own scooters.
Under the companies’ business model, users can check out an electric scooter, ride it to their destination, leave it there and pay via an app. Users can also bring the scooters home and charge them to get a small payment.
When the scooters came to Atlanta, residents complained about safety issues as well as scooters being left all over city streets and sidewalks, blocking pedestrians and drivers.
Mayor Steve Tumlin and other city officials cited these problems in their decision to ban the devices, as well as concerns about their high rates of speed on narrow city sidewalks and on trails.
